QUIET CAPSULE

CSM COMPETITION WINNER

PERMANENT INSTALLATION

Quiet Capsule is the first prayer and meditation space in Central Saint Martins - London UK. Launched as a competition within the spatial design department, this project is a result of a collaboration between me and my architect course colleague Catherine Bella. The project budget of 20K covered the construction, promotion and furniture costs which employed only students and alumni from Central Saint Martins.

THE HERO'S JOURNEY

A NARRATIVE FRAMEWORK TO THE EXPERIENCE

The Hero’s journey is a narrative theory first conceptualized  by the Junghian scholar Joseph Campbell in 1949. The idea is that in every story plot there are recurring elements and archetypical characters generating a predictable sequence of events. The lost of order is the main driver of the plot, this fosters change proving that without a conflict doesn’t exist a story. “ The law of conflict is the soul of story. the story stands for life, and being alive means being in perpetual conflict”    –Jean Paul Satre.

Quiet Capsule is designed as an immersive experience unfolding from Central Saint Martins to the Quiet Capsule and back. The application of the ‘Hero’s Journey’ facilitates the visitor experience through a specific use of materiality and lighting that allows the ritual of entering a ‘special world’ to happen.

EXPERIMENTATION AND PROMOTION

The essence of Quiet Capsule is to strip away from any form of identity. Its features are designed to allow the users to maximize their very personal spiritual experience. However, these are a few experimentations developed for the launch of the project. Among these, a series of three seri-graphic posters in limited edition of five, calling the people of Central Saint Martins to visit the space. 'The Mosque', 'The Church' and 'The Sinagogue' have also been projected as live .gifs on the screens of the whole University of the Arts of London circuit for the week prior the opening of the space.

THE SPACE

KEY POINTS

A neutral space without icons with flexible space features to allow ease of movement. A hidden storage space at the entrance has been placed for discretion and respect of all the religions involved in the same space. A play of lights creates a strong contrast within the structure. LOCATION: 1st floor of the Central Saint Martins campus in Kings Cross, the orientation and site for the construction of the 7x4 m structure has been depicted after a detailed analysis of people's flow across the building. It emerged to be the best spot possible for its natural sound isolation.

HOW

RELIGIOUS

IS CENTRAL

SAINT MARTINS ?

01- ORDINARY WORLD

This is the ordinary world of our hero. Suddenly a new structure is growing from the cement of Central Saint Martins.

02- CALL TO ACTION

Diffused lines of light are leading to the entrance. Here the inside can exhale towards the outside.

03- ACCEPT THE CALL

Transition phase, enter the narrow corridor.

04- LIMINAL STAGE

Enter the locker room. Set of actions prescribed to enter the space: remove your shoes, leave your food and drinks out, respect the silence. Set of actions pre-ritual (Muslim prepare their rugs to enter the prayer space).

05- THRESHOLD

Cross the corridor, barefoot. It is a point of non return, the prayer area is approached.

06- ENTER THE SPECIAL WORLD

Enter the Quiet Capsule

07- THE RITUAL

Find yourself, take your time, pray, meditate and relax.

08- COME BACK CHANGED

Leave the space and return to the ordinary world refreshed.
